Jay was General Secretary of the Congress of South African Trade Unions.  He then served as Minister responsible for the Reconstruction and Development Programme in President Mandela’s office and as Minister of Post, Telecommunications, and Broadcasting.  He is the former Chair of the Board of Directors of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition headquartered in Geneva.  Jay sits on the Board of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation established to promote African development through a focus on promoting good governance. He serves in an advisory capacity for a number of international organizations including the UN Broadband Commission and the UNSG`s Lead Committee on Nutrition. He is the Patron of ‘Scatterlings of Africa’ a paleontological foundation linking archaeological sites across Africa.

He has gained many honors, including becoming the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur, one of France’s highest decorations, received the ‘Drivers for Change Award’ from the Mail & Guardian, The Ellen Kuzwayo Award from the University of Johannesburg, an Honorary Doctorate Technology Degree in Engineering and the Built Environment from the Durban University of Technology.  In 2014 Jay was awarded a lifetime achievement award prize in recognition for “Democratic Governance and Development in Africa” by the Millennium Excellence Foundation based in Ghana.  Jay has returned full time to serving the communities he is involved in and upliftment of same.  He writes a blog at

Pieter-Dirk Uys has been in the theatre since the mid-1960s and has written and  performed 20 plays and over 30 revues and one-man shows throughout SA and  overseas.  He writes, directs, acts, produces, makes dresses and wears them!  Having  survived the mediocrity of apartheid kultuur, it is his therapy and joy to expose the  bones of that dinosaur for the entertainment of democratic audiences.

He has been unemployed since 1975 and has been working ever since (  and celebrated his 70th birthday recently and has plans for the future.

Alan Knott-Craig (Jnr) is the Founder of World of Avatar, an investment house for mobile apps for Africa. Between 2003 and 2013 he co-founded and/or funded 17 companies in the TMT sector in Africa, including Cellfind, one of Africa’s first location-based services providers, Lucky Mobile, iFind34600, COLV, World of Avatar, Toodu, FSMS, AKC Mid ResTriloq, 6th Line, Daily Maverick, ARC Telecoms, Pondering Panda, MorMor Media, and He also served as CEO of Mxit, Africa’s biggest social network . Prior to this he served as CEO of iBurst, building one of South Africa’s largest wireless broadband networks. Alan is a Chartered Accountant and was formerly the Founder and CEO of Cellfind. He is a Non-Executive Director of  Broadlink, Executive Director of Wireless Business Solutions Holdings, Non-Executive Director of Mxit Lifestyle. Previous Chairman of Lucky Mobile and Cyber Listing Services. He is now the Founder & CEO of Project Isizwe, contracting with Government and managing the deployment of the largest public Free WiFi network in South Africa.

He is famous for an email that went viral many years ago and in April 2008 he published “Don’t Panic”, a best-selling book aimed at persuading South Africans to stay in the country. In 2009 he was named as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.

In 2012, co-authored Mobinomics, the story of Mxit, the biggest social network to come from Africa.

In 2014 he published “Really, Don’t’ Panic” and “Moenie Stres Nie”, a follow up to the 2008 edition of Don’t Panic, followed by “So you want to be  Hero’.

Barry Blomkamp is one of SA's top speakers and entertainers. From being a successful business man, an entrepreneur, a sportsman, a Motor Racer, and a family man all in his sighted life… To a dramatic accident in his Lotus Sports Car which very nearly killed him!

Barry qualified with distinctions as a Grade A Auto Technician in 1978 and soon realised his deep ambition of owning his own Service Station and racing a Lotus sports car. In December 1988 Barry was severely injured in a horrendous motor crash. He says he was fortunate to only lose his eye-sight. After recovering from the crash he studied Information Technology and qualified as a Computer Consultant and specialised in computers adapted for the needs of differently- abled people.

In the 90s, Barry co-founded and was Chairman of ‘Computing for Disabled Persons Special Interest Group’ which, under his Chairmanship, was honoured with the Computer Society’s “Special Interest Group of the Year” award. He has also organised and run a number of very successful conferences dealing with disability issues. Parallel to all this, Barry ran his own Public Relations and Fund Raising consultancy, quadrupling the number of guide dogs in Cape Town and Raised almost a million Rand.

Barry served on the committee of the Lighthouse Association for the Blind for 14 years, serving a term as Vice-Chairman. In 1994 he was awarded the ‘Yvonne Archer Memorial Shield’ for conquering blindness. Barry also managed this organisation for 18 months, creating and developing new business systems and up grading the levels of public awareness. Apart from his successful Turbo Talk Training public speaking business, Barry also contracts himself out as a Sales Consultant – Specialising in the sale of high-end phone systems.

Barry has been interviewed by over 10 radio stations and just some of his Clients include Afrox; Auto & General; British American Tobacco; Charter Life; City of Cape Town; Deloitte & Touche; Eskom; Indwe Risk; Institute of Credit Managers; Iscor; Maersk Shipping; Momentum Health; Murray and Roberts; Mutual & Federal; Old Mutual; Pam Golding Property; Retail Motor Industry; Safmarine; Sea Harvest; Sovereign Health; Tiger Wheel & Tyre and Vodacom.

To this day he is still very involved in the W.P. Motor Club where Barry is Deputy Chief commentator. For his perseverance and determination, he was honoured with a merit award, as well as the prestigious “Clubman of the Year” trophy and in 2004 Barry’s contribution to the W.P. Motor Club was recognised by conferring him with Honours.
