Networking Breakfast Friday 7th April 2017 SPEAKER ” Rhoda Kadalie TOPIC ” Where have we gone wrong & how can we go right?”

Rhoda Kadalie was a Human Rights Commissioner for three years, appointed by President Mandela, where she conducted investigations into human rights violations in prisons, poverty conditions of farm workers, and children’s places of safety. Many of her investigations received wide media coverage and brought to the attention of government violations occurring within the state.

Prior to that she was an academic, teaching social anthropology and women’s studies, and founder of the Gender Equity Unit at UWC. She was also Amy Biehl’s Professor and became her close confidante and friend. Rhoda has travelled extensively internationally, presenting lectures and papers on human rights and gender politics in South Africa.

She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Liberal Arts from the University of Uppsala, Sweden, an Honorary Doctorate from her alma mater, UWC; and a Doctor of Philosophy Honoris Causa from University of Stellenbosch. Rhoda has served on UCT’s Council for about nine years and on University of Stellenbosch’s Council for two years. She received a Human Rights Award in Toronto Canada and the Rapport/City Press Prestige Award for column writing.

Rhoda has been featured in numerous magazines, newspaper articles and many books and has written many articles and chapters in books about gender politics, liberalism, foreign policy, reproductive rights, and some biographical essays. Her book, In Your Face: Passionate Conversations about People and Politics, was published in 2009. Her second e-booklet, The Politics of Pregnancy, also published in collaboration with her daughter, Julia Bertelsmann, is part of a series called, Kort en Kragtig, To the Point, 2012. Rhoda has been a guest columnist for the Business Day and Die Burger for many years. Currently she writes for The Citizen and Beeld and her column is syndicated to all Afrikaans newspapers.  Rhoda is currently Executive Director of the Impumelelo Social Innovations Centre.

 Siya Mapoko is the author of " The Best Advice I Got" and "Conversations with JSE AltX entrepreneurs". He is a businessman, entrepreneur, an international speaker, seminar leader, executive speech-advisor, scientific and business researcher. Siya has researched such diverse fields as chemistry, biochemistry, MRI drug research (contrast agents), investment analysis, equity trading, and entrepreneurship.

Siya graduated from UCT with a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry and thereafter spent time researching his MSc thesis at GlazoSmithKline in England, focusing on contrast agents for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). He joined Investec Assett Management as an Equities Trader and was also a financial markets reporter on SAfm.

Siya has spoken to thousands of people from various parts of the world and has been invited as a guest lecturer at universities and business schools in South Africa and Europe. He has been nominated for a number of business and entrepreneurship awards and in December 2010 he was honoured by The Striding Man Society, an initiative of The House of Johnnie Walker: he was named one of 30 South African Striders and featured in their book titled "Celebrating Strides".
